Albay will always have a special place in my heart. Growing up, it was the summer spot for our family—especially on my mom’s side. Every year, we'd pack up, hop on a bus or van, and head south to spend the break with relatives. It wasn’t about fancy hotels or touristy things—it was about family, home-cooked food, and being surrounded by people we loved. One thing that always stood out? Mayon Volcano. You can't miss it—tall, perfectly cone-shaped, and always there in the background. Whether we were eating breakfast, riding a tricycle to the market, or just playing outside, Mayon was always watching. Even now, just seeing it brings back all those memories—cousins laughing, old houses with squeaky floors, and afternoons spent chasing the ice cream man down the street.

Things I Always Loved Doing in Albay:

  • Cagsawa Ruins – We used to take pictures here with Mayon in the background. It’s where an old church stood before it was buried by a volcanic eruption. The place feels peaceful, and the view is amazing.

  • ATV rides near Mayon – The last time I visited, we tried this, and it was so much fun! You get to ride through muddy trails with Mayon right in front of you. Highly recommend if you're up for a little adventure.

  • Eating everything Bicolano – This region is known for spicy food, and I’m here for it. Bicol Express, Laing —it’s all coconut-y, rich, and has just the right kick. And don’t forget pili nuts—my family always brings back bags of them to share.

  • Sumlang Lake – If you want something quiet, this is a lovely spot. You can ride a bamboo raft and just chill while staring at Mayon. Simple but so relaxing.

Cultural Tip

If you're lucky to visit in August, check out the Ibalong Festival in Legazpi. It’s fun, colorful, and based on old Bicol legends. Lots of dancing, parades, and people in costume. It’s a great way to get a feel for the local culture.

Getting to Albay

  • By Plane – The easiest way is flying into Bicol International Airport (about 15–20 minutes from Legazpi City). Flights are available from Manila or Cebu.

  • By Bus – This is how we used to travel. Long ride (around 10-12 hours from Manila), but great for bonding. We’d stop at roadside eateries and just enjoy the journey.

  • By Car – If you're up for a road trip, driving down through South Luzon is scenic and full of side stops.

  • By Private Transfer

Simple Travel Tips

  • Stay somewhere in Legazpi or Daraga for easy access to spots.

  • Bring sunblock and a fan—it can get really hot!

  • Always check if Mayon is active before doing anything near it.

  • Chat with locals—they're super friendly and full of great recommendations.

Every time I go back to Albay, I feel a mix of nostalgia and warmth. There’s something about going back to those childhood places that instantly fills my heart — where life felt simple, surrounded by family, nature, and traditions. I still remember the carefree days… laughs echoing through the rice fields, the smell of home-cooked food, church processions winding through town — and of course, being outdoors until the sun dipped behind the trees.

Planning to visit? A few simple recs to make the most of your trip:
✔ Explore the Rice Fields — Go early morning or before sunset for the best views. It’s peaceful and picture-perfect.

✔ Try the Local Food — Street eats or home-style dishes, everything’s full of flavor and tradition.

✔ Catch a Church Procession or Town Fiesta — If your timing’s right, it’s such a beautiful glimpse of the culture.

✔ Just Slow Down — Sometimes the best thing to do is nothing at all — soak in the nature, chat with the locals, and enjoy the little moments.
